Virginia Beach, Virginia

During our international travel “intermission,” I had an opportunity to spend time with my parents and two older brothers where I grew up in Virginia Beach.  And since I’m normally home only for rushed holiday visits, this was a rare occasion to be able to hang out with my childhood best friend, Amanda Lynn, my goddaughter, Ava and her mother Alison and other friends from college over the course of multiple visits.

For my father’s surgery, I had given him a hard time that he was a difficult patient and I am admitting here for the first time that he was actually fairly well behaved! The surgery was successful and we were all pleased that rehabilitation went faster than expected. He continues rounds of physical therapy, but has recovered nicely. This visit to Virginia Beach also marked the first time I met my newborn niece Vanessa. She is the fourth child of my brother Nick and his wife Christine.  She’s such a sweet baby and it was wonderful to spend time with all my nieces and nephews. Adam and I returned from Washington DC just in time for a family dinner that included my brother Nick, a Navy submariner, who was deploying for a month the following day.

Adam spent his time in Virginia Beach waking up every morning at 5:45 am to work out my oldest brother Jamie, who’s a wrestling coach and teacher and trains with friends and former students.  It was as if Adam were trying to cram a year’s worth of workouts into three weeks!  Jamie has become quite the master griller, so we had a lot of outdoor cookouts and quality family time with ribs, slow-roasted pork, fish tacos, grilled tomatoes, eggplant and of course rice.

One of Adam’s most memorable days included driving out to a farm in the borough of Sandbridge with Jamie to get some fresh corn for one of our barbecues.  Jamie is friends with the family that runs the farm stand, so Adam had a chance to enjoy fresh corn off the stalk (which he claims is the best he’s ever had) and drink some good ‘ole Virginia moonshine with the grandfather, Clint Eastwood’s doppleganger.
