Venice

Venice is basically the Disneyland of Italy.  It’s overpriced, overcrowded and full of tourists and souvenir shops, but there is still something undeniably appealing about it.  We were told by a few different workers that there were almost no Venetians living in Venice.  All of the tourists have driven the prices so high that locals can’t afford to live there anymore.  They have to stay outside of the city and commute in on expensive water taxis.  And the restaurants all cost about double what they would cost in any other city in Italy.

But Venice is one of those places that you just have to see at least once in your life and as long as you approach it with the right frame of mind, it can be really enjoyable.  St. Mark’s Basilica and the Ducal Plaza are stunning and if you go first thing in the morning, you can pretty much have them to yourself.  And even though private Gondola rides cost upwards of $100 Euro an hour, you can take water taxis along the same routes for a fraction of the price and see the same breathtakingly gorgeous views of the Grand Canal.

And even though most of the food is really expensive, there are some unique Venetian specialities that are delicious and affordable if you can find them.  One of our favorite places that we happened to just stumble into was called Annika Gourmet.  It was an all-organic shop (complete with compostable utensils) that specialized in Venetian local food.  I had a sardine and pumpkin casserole and Amanda had a radicchio and veggie fish lasagna and they were both superb.

All in all, we had a really good two nights in Venice, but I don’t think I would want to stay much longer than that.  And we were excited for our next stop to go visit our friends Lucca and Valentina in Bologna.
